This Year 2 module aims to introduce and position community music as a vibrant and exciting contemporary practice.
In parallel with class workshops and lectures students will undertake ongoing work-based learning in a community music setting, designed to develop an experiential understanding of the key concepts and skills of workshop practice.
Students are supported to develop a personal, self-reflective approach to their community music.
The module aims to:
- enable students to gain an understanding of the key issues in practising music in the community;
- develop their understanding of the needs and interests of specific community groups/organisations;
- develop the planning, implementation and evaluation of workshops and music activities for specific audiences and groups;
- develop students’ self-reflective practice.
Earlier module sessions reflect and interpret the history of community music in the UK, cover main theories and concepts, and set out basic workshop structures and practice: planning, implementation and evaluation.
In parallel with these sessions students undertake work-based learning in a community music setting. This experience enables students to refine skills in running workshops as well as developing notions of reflective practice.
Later module sessions will also encourage students to explore community music more broadly, including inputs from practising community musicians/music therapists which introduce possibilities for future engagement within the field.
