This module is an introduction to quantitative research and data analysis for sociologists. Its aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of (a) the sources of sociologically relevant quantitative data, (b) the quantitative research process, (c) the most common statistical methods relevant to sociologists, and (d) the interpretation, presentation and contextualisation of research results.
By engaging with all aspects of the module, students will gain practical experience in the following areas:
- Designing and collecting primary quantitative data
- Accessing and managing secondary quantitative data
- Undertaking quantitative data manipulation and analysis using a statistical software package (IBM’s Statistical Package for the Social Sciences: SPSS)
- Performing and interpreting basic statistical analysis (descriptive and inferential)
- Writing up results from statistical analysis
The knowledge and skills acquired through this module will enable students to (a) formulate and undertake dissertation projects with a substantial quantitative component, (b) embark on a postgraduate research degree, or (c) apply for analytical jobs in the public or private sector.
