This module develops students’ understanding of a range of contemporary social, cultural, technological, ecological, and economic phenomena, which impact on the occurrence of crime and deviance. It will highlight examples of real-world significance and explore the changing nature of crime and deviance in particular contexts. The module will also engage with the societal response given to each example of contemporary deviance. This will enable students for the first time, to think about the relevance of criminological thought to a range of social phenomena in a range of societies. In respect of the teaching and learning activities the module will contribute to developing a range of transferable skills which are intended to enhance their performance in assessments and contribute to securing employment.
The aims of the module are to:
- Develop an awareness and familiarity with the emerging forms of deviance facilitated by contemporary developments in a range of societies;
- Provide theoretical insights into a number of emerging crimes in contemporary societies;
- Introduce changing patterns and perceptions of crime and deviance in contemporary societies

Welcome to the module Publishing Then & Now, part of the MA in Publishing programme at York St John University. Everything that you will need for the module you will find here, on the module Moodle site. Information about your assessments, your reading list, contacting your tutor and your research tasks you will find in the toggles below, arranged by week. Each week will have a different focus so make sure that you keep up with the assigned reading and activities.
This module seeks to examine current trends in publishing with a particular focus on the nature of independent publishing and regional publishing. There will be a historical overview of key moments in the development of publishing today.
In order to the analyse the contemporary this module will consider the historical development of the publishing industry through a case study approach. This will be used as a foundation from which to assess future trends and challenges. There will be a consideration of different platforms for the publication of literary fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Other related aspects of ‘book cultures’ will be considered, including blogging, reviewing and literary prizes.
Teaching will take place face-to-face on Wednesday evening, 6-8pm, in room TU/001 on the York city centre campus. See you then.
