Welcome to the module
Your dissertation will be one of the most challenging and the most rewarding parts of your undergraduate experience. In many ways, it is the intellectual culmination of your degree, and a chance for you to become an expert on a topic that you are passionate about. Please engage with the support that the module offers; attend the group meetings, and stay in regular contact with your supervisor.
We look forward to working with you on your dissertation projects.
Supervisors will be allocated after the proposals are in and have been evaluated. You will be notified of your supervisor early in Semester One.
If you have questions in the meantime, please contact the Module Director, Dr Jo Waugh (j.waugh@yorksj.ac.uk)

3FS101-2018-19-SEM1 Documentary Film Studies, 2018-19 SEM1
Welcome to Documentary Film Studies! On this site you will find all kinds of useful things including reviews and other helpful resources, essay suggestions, details of assignments and the schedule of lectures and screenings. Obviously, there isn't enough time to show you all the films I would like to so I would urge you to see as many documentaries as you can and to explore the genre as widely as possible from the very old to the very new, from 'traditional' to the experimental and also documentaries from as many different countries and in as many styles as possible. I think you'll find it a much more diverse, exciting, challenging and thought-provoking genre than you would ever have considered possible. This is a great time to be studying the subject since there has been an explosion of documentary films in recent years, on all sorts of subjects and in lots of different ways. Each week we will may concentrate on a filmmaker or a documentary film movement or theme. This will involve a lecture, a discussion and a screening - film is a communal medium and meant to be watched in groups; whilst I hope and expect you to supplement your viewing with suggestions on your own, we will, as a group, experience documentary cinema. Enjoy it!
Learning Outcomes : At the end of this module you will be able to -
- Critically consider and debate individual documentary films, film-makers and documentary movements
- Critically evaluate documentary films within recognised and appropriate critical categories and discussions
- Analyse documentaries according to historical development, technical considerations and cultural, political and global circumstanc
