Description / Aims / Rationale | The module provides an opportunity to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills essential for effective teachers of children aged between three and seven and to consider in some depth the pedagogical choices which will confront them in their career in teaching.
It aims to provide student teachers with opportunities to: · identify and articulate the principles of early years education; · critically analyse and consider the implications of current research and legislation relating to early years education and the needs of young children; · know about and understand the rationale and theoretical underpinnings of a number of well established early years approaches; · research and analyse particular settings in order to interrogate the underlying rationale/ principles which underpin practice in that setting; · be able to take a wider view of the world and draw intelligently from a range of approaches in order to develop a rationale for effective early years education in their own future settings.
The module reflects current standards for teachers. |
Learning Outcomes | · 1: critically examine current practices in Early Years and the impact on children’s learning through literature based research · 2: identify and critique information in relation to Early Years education drawing on recent research · 3: analyse and critically evaluate current policy and initiatives in relation to Early Years education · 4: communicate effectively using academic conventions appropriate to level three. |
