This module will take a biopsychosocial approach to the teaching of reconditioning from injury and return to sport. Recovery from injury begins as soon as possible after an initial treatment of an acute injury and aims to restore the athlete to full quality of life and to a level of sports performance experienced prior to injury. Knowles (2016) highlights rehabilitation as being a medical model which aims to restore day to day functioning, whereas reconditioning is a performance based model aiming to restore the athlete to optimal sport functioning.
This module focusses on the latter perspective through taking an interdisciplinary and optimal loading approach. This module has a critical theoretical and applied practical skills development focus, and meets a number of core competencies of a sport and exercise therapist e.g. rehabilitation and education and professional practice issues. The module will be heavily applied and use a problem based learning (PBL) to develop informed clinical reasoning skills drawing from previous knowledge, experience and contemporary literature. Students are expected to reflect on the sport and exercise therapy competencies developed in this module and how these have been experienced and achieved through work related learning.
This module aims to develop an awareness of safe and effective working practice within sports injury reconditioning and a critical awareness and application of theory and empirical evidence to justify sports injury reconditioning decisions.
