This module addresses psychopathology through a thorough review of psychological disorders based on relevant diagnostic frameworks such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). It includes consideration of predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating and protective factors. Psychopharmacology will be addressed in relation to each of the disorders. In addition, the unit addresses some of the more advanced psychotherapy skills and concepts that are required for working with more complex client populations, including ruptures in the therapeutic alliance, defences, transference, and counter-transference. Such psychotherapy processes are linked to understanding the personality structure, developmental processes, and psychopathology of the client, as well as the research on evidence-based practice
