MPR210-2018-19 Critical Concepts in Applied Theatre, 2018-19
This module will provide you with the opportunity to critically explore, test and model approaches to applied and community arts practice. You will engage in the claims made for the ‘efficacy’ of applied theatre practices seeking to understand their underlying assumptions. The focus will be on the exploration of how the concepts and rationales at play in applied and community practice manifest themselves in the ethics, impacts and aesthetics of applied practice. This module will provide you with the opportunity to engage with conceptual and theoretical issues relating to applied theatre at an advanced level.
This module will provide you with opportunities to encounter and question a range of models and methodologies in applied and community practice. It will deepen and broaden your understanding of the interrelationship between arts practice, ethics, impact and aesthetics. An additional focus of the module will be the importance of research and evaluation findings in applied theatre being disseminated in appropriate fashions to appropriate audiences.
Theoretical explorations will inform and be informed by the students’ on-going applied theatre practice.
This module aims to:
- Explore key concepts and methodologies in applied practice through the investigation of case studies and theoretical concepts
- Explore the ideological assumptions that are embedded in methodological strategies of art making, doing and thinking.
- Enable students to critically consider such issues as facilitation, empowerment, accessibility, otherness, and participation as they relate to applied theatre practice.

MPR231-2018-19-SEM1 The Reflective Practitioner, 2018-19 SEM1
Through this module students become articulate practitioners able to communicate the research within their practice and place it within appropriate contexts.
Students will explore, test and model approaches to the theory/practice nexus and interrogate the possibilities for the generation and communication of knowledge in and through practice, and by doing so will deepen and broaden their understanding of the interrelationship between arts practice, knowledge and research.
This module will develop key concepts of practice, process and knowledge in the arts. It aims to:
- Interrogate concepts of knowledge, particularly in relation to practice, experience, making and doing.
- Explore approaches to generating and/or communicating knowledge through practice.
- Allow students to explore and model methodological approaches prior to undertaking an independent project.
- Develop students’ sense of themselves as researchers in the arts.
