MUS5007M-2022-23 MUS5007M // PER5021M | Professional Contexts and Practice // Professional Production| 2022-23
In this module students work on a full-scale professional production within a work-based environment, directly supporting students’ engagement with employability. Whilst there are many employment opportunities for musicians and musical theatre specialists, sustaining a career is challenging. Alternative career models are becoming ever more common, and the skills required for employment (either by oneself or within a business) are becoming increasingly diversified. This module is intended to introduce students to professionalising their practice in two ways. First, by helping them engage the critical research processes necessary to assess professional opportunities and career paths through interviews with professionals and secondary research. Second, by helping them form a company to rehearse and produce a performance to a professional standard, engaging in multiple roles throughout the production process.
This module aims to:
provide opportunities for students to develop skills in qualitative research,
help students develop professional networks both in their specialism and more broadly within the arts, and
help students gain an understanding of how to critically evaluate professional opportunities within the context of the wider arts sector,
provide an opportunity for students to gain experience in the practical execution of a large-scale production.
