SOC6009M-2022-23-SEM1 SOC6009M | GENDER, BODY, POWER | 2022-23 SEM1
INTRODUCTION: GENDER, BODY, POWER
Bodies are not simply ‘natural’. Rather, bodies embody the social and the social imbues embodiment. Bodies are socially marked and produced. Power and powerlessness suffuse, inscribe, discipline and hurt bodies. While the body is shaped in relation to social ideas, and seen through social values, the body is also something more. It is through feeling bodies that we exist in the world and acquire knowledge. This study module brings bodies to the centre of sociological analysis, and to the centre of knowing and being.
