Aims

Understanding the methodologies and methods of data collection that social scientists undertake as they collect data is central to the informed evaluation of their research. Placing an emphasis on exploring such debates is therefore essential at Level 1. The module aims to support learners to develop an awareness of the philosophical, practical and ethical debates that inform sociological research. It is envisaged that this module will prepare students for further research modules at Level 2 and Level 3 where students are required to gain research design skills and practice carrying out empirical research.

This module aims to provide an opportunity to explore the value of some of the key sociological research paradigms. It also endeavors to enable students to evaluate a variety of sociological methods of data collection. It will also encourage learners to critically reflect on ethical issues that confront sociological research.
