INTRODUCTION TO THE MODULE
This module will provide you with a foundation knowledge of American Studies by focusing on the key myths/themes of the US experience, such as mission, freedom, the American Dream, the Melting Pot and multiculturalism. You will be introduced to a variety of different mediums including film, art, television documentaries, cinema and printed works.
MODULE READING LIST
You will need to purchase George Brown Tindall and David E. Shi’s America: A Narrative History (Brief Seventh Edition, W. W. Norton & Company 2007). Make sure that you purchase the Brief Seventh Edition as this is a much shorter version than the traditional two volume tome! This text can usually be found second hand on Amazon for less than a pound. It is a chronological and thematic text and will be of value to you throughout your degree. We will suggest further reading throughout the module.
