Module Overview
This module explores of the relevant and contemporary debates in youth, crime and justice from a UK perspectives. We draw on concepts from a range of different views and arguments that will help you develop a variety of youth and youth justice based issues and concerns. The focus of the module is to give you a grounding in youth justice, inequalities related to youth justice and the agencies that are engaged with these issues.
The behaviours of children and young people are often considered within a discourse which frames them as deviant, anti-social or criminal. This module addresses theoretical approaches to understanding the social position of young people and approaches to youth justice. It takes the position that youth does not exist as a homogenous group but that versions of youth come to the fore within particular social conditions. Alongside this a consideration of cross-cultural approaches to addressing youth, crime and justice contribute to an understanding of alternative ways of providing for young people who are drawn into the justice system. The aims of the module are to:
For the assessment, you will develop a case study that allows you to choose a social division in regards to youth justice (class, gender or ethnicity), to examine the range of youth justice policy responses and to come up with your own policy alternatives in comparison to current approaches.
